John Smoltz showed off a new slider he's been working on, tossing six innings of one-run ball in Atlanta's 4-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. Smoltz allowed five hits and struck out five for the Braves, lowering his spring ERA to 2.00. He said hitters can expect a different look from him this season. "I'm working on that hard slider, but I am also going to use my changeup as a weapon," Smoltz said. "It won't just be a pitch I use. It will be a big factor. |

The Cleveland Indians optioned right-hander Jeremy Guthrie to Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, trimming their major league roster to 31 players. Guthrie was 1-1 in spring training with a 4.00 ERA and one save in five games including one start Friday. The 26-year-old Guthrie is a former first-round draft pick who has struggled to break into the Indians starting rotation or bullpen. He appeared in one game for Cleveland last season, giving up four runs in six innings. |

With a mop of highlighted hair tumbling to the top of his shoulders, Graves struggled through his one inning Sunday during the Cleveland Indians' 9-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the team that cast him aside last season. It was the first shaky appearance this spring for Graves, who is competing with Steve Karsay for a spot in the Indians' bullpen. |

Designated hitter Travis Hafner played all nine innings at first base Monday in Cleveland's 5-1 loss to the Phillies. Hafner made a couple of nice defensive plays, continuing what has been a surprisingly impressive defensive spring at first base. Hafner has been unable to play first base the last two years due to an injured elbow, but the elbow has improved to the point that he is now an option for manager Eric Wedge in the field. |

Relief pitcher Felix Heredia, released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, signed a minor league contract Tuesday with the Cleveland Indians. The 30-year-old Heredia is 28-19 with six saves and a 4.42 ERA in 511 appearances. He allowed six runs in five innings with Arizona this spring training.
